Alumni in the News
David C. Dunand, PhD ’91, DMSE faculty member ’91–’97, was named the James N. and Margie M. Krebs Professor in the department of Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern University. The intent of the chair is to integrate economic and environmental concerns into teaching and doing research that is sensitive to strengthening the US economy and simultaneously improving regional and global environment. He was also elected Fellow of ASM International in 2007.
Robert D. Shull, ’68, writes, “After years of reading the Course III information in the Technology Review and not sending anything in, I thought now might be the appropriate time, despite my keeping in touch with MIT through my activities with the local MIT Alumni Club of Washington DC and interviewing prospective students for MIT. (I also have a son who received a bachelor’s degree from MIT in 1996, but in Course 2 rather than Course 3, as he got his numbers mixed up!) After leaving, I obtained a PhD at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Metallurgy and Mining, followed by a 3-year postdoctoral fellowship at Caltech. I subsequently joined the Metallurgy Division of the National Bureau of Standards (now known as NIST) in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and for the past 12 years have been the group leader of the Magnetic Materials Group. Much of my work has focused on nano-magnetism, with a focus on magnetic domain motion and magnetic refrigeration. I also helped initiate and then write the National Nanotechnology Initiative in 2001, and still sit on the orchestrating committee, NSET (Nanoscale Science, Engineering, and Technology Subcommittee), of that initiative. Four months ago, I also became the President of TMS. I still remember the great days I had at MIT, and credit much of my success to those courses I took in Course 3 and to the people I met (professors and students combined) during those days.”
