Awards and Honors

Prof. Suresh was chosen by the Technical University of Denmark, Copenhagen, to deliver the H.C. Ørsted Lecture for 2006. For this University-wide lecture, Suresh was hosted by the Rector (President) of the University, Dr. Lars Pallesen and members of the Ørsted Lecturer Selection Committee. Suresh delivered his lecture on March 28, 2006 on "Nanotechnology and the Study of Human Diseases." Prior Ørsted Lecturers include Prof. Pierre de Gennes, Nobel Laureate in Physics, and Prof. Roger Penrose, a renowned mathematician.

Prof. Suresh delivered the Peter Winchell Memorial Lecture at Purdue University on April 14, 2006. This lecture was established in memory of Prof. Winchell, who received his doctorate from MIT in Metallurgy under the supervision of the late Prof. Morris Cohen.   Suresh's lecture focused on apply the structure-property-function paradigm of materials science and engineering to probe key problems in human health.

Around DMSE

It is a pleasure to announce that Angelita Mireles with join DMSE as Academic Administrator at the end of June, accepting the position currently held by Kathy Farrell. Kathy will be leaving the position at that time, so that she can devote herself full time to raising her new child, Sean. It is also a pleasure to announce that Amy Shea will join the Department as Undergraduate Assistant in the Academic Office.

Angelita Mireles received her Bachelor of Science from MIT, majoring in Biology, and graduating in 1999. She worked in ASO part time while she was a student, and in the DMSE Academic Office as the Graduate Assistant after graduating from MIT. Angelita worked as an Undergraduate Administrator for the Political Science, Public Policy and Urban Studies Department at Stanford for three years, and is currently the Program Administrator for the Public Policy Program at Stanford. Angie will relocate to Boston at the end of June.

Amy Shea received her BA in criminal justice from Salve Regina University in 1997 and a Master's degree from Lesley University in 2000, majoring in counseling psychology. For the past two years, she has worked as an Administrative Assistant in Mechanical Engineering, and previously worked as an AA in the Sloan School. She also worked as a guidance counselor for Mitignon High School for a few years. Amy will begin her new position on June 5.
