Around DMSE

The Spring 2004 issue of MURJ (Massachusetts Institute of Technology Undergraduate Research Journal) republished a Tech Talk article on Prof. Gerd Ceder's group and their work on on data mining. MURJ is an interdisciplinary publication that welcomes submissions. The next deadline is late September 2004.

Christophoros C. Vassiliou '04, a Course III minor, was profiled in the "What's Next?" feature in the April 30, 2004 Tech. Ian Ybarra, Course II '04, is the author of the column.

Awards

Subra Suresh, head of the Department and Ford Professor of Engineering, will receive a Humboldt Research Award, conferred by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in recognition of lifetime achievements in science. Awardees are invited to carry out research projects of their own choice with colleagues in Germany. Prof. Suresh was recently elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The 178 new Fellows and 24 new Foreign Honorary Members are world-renowned leaders in scholarship, business, the arts, and public affairs.

The department was well represented at the 2004 School of Engineering Infinite Mile awards. Among the winners this year were Kenneth E. Greene, Jr., and Erminia Piccinonno. Please see the SoE website to learn about all of this year's winners.

Four members of the DMSE community were recognized at the May 4 Institute Awards Convocation. Kasetta Coleman '04 received the Ronald E. McNair Scholarship Award for her combination of strong academic performance and considerable contribution to the minority community.

Catherine Tweedie '04 G received the Betsy Schumacker Award for excellence in athletic competition.

Professor Caroline Ross received the Irwin Sizer Award for the Most Significant Improvement in MIT Education.

Professor Donald Sadoway received the Everett More Baker Memorial Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in recognition of exceptional interest and ability in the instruction of undergraduates.

Carol A. Roberts was inducted into the MIT Quarter Century Club.

Prof. Chris Schuh is a recipient of the Young Investigator Program Award from the Office of Naval Research.

Prof. Tom Eagar and Patricio Mendez are co-recipients of the Charles H. Jennings Memorial Medal from the American Welding Society.

We're delighted to see the hard work and dedication of these students, faculty, and staff recognized.

Upcoming Events

Please join us at the DMSE luncheon immediately following commencement on June 4th. All graduates and their families are invited as are alumni, current students, faculty, and staff. Tables will be set up in the Chipman Room (8-314) and nearby classrooms.
