NEWS
Professor
Subra Suresh, DMSE Head, is very pleased to announce that Dr.
Christopher Schuh has decided to join our faculty. Dr. Schuh,
who recently received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University,
is presently a Presidential Post-doctoral Fellow at the Lawrence
Livermore National Laboratory. He plans to come on board as Assistant
Professor of Materials Science and Engineering in late spring
or early summer of 2002. Please join him in extending a warm welcome.

NEWS
Deborah Chung,
Ph.D. in Materials Science, 1977, has let us know that her research
breakthrough on cement-based pn-junction has appeared in Science
News (July 28, 2001). The news article is titled "Setting
electronics in artificial stone."

FACULTY
HONORS
Professor
Harry Tuller presented
an invited lecture in the "Faculty of Science Public Lecture Series"
at Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand entitled " Promise
of Materials Science in the 21st Century" on July 19, 2001. He
was interviewed by the press regarding his views of how new developments
will impact society in the coming decades.
Professor
Ned Thomas has been selected
as this year's IMS (Institute
of materials Science) Distinguished Lecturer in recognition of
his outstanding and numerous contributions to the field of polymer
microstructure, The lecture will take place this fall.

TRANSITIONS
It is a pleasure
to announce that Jenna Picceri has accepted the position of Administrative
Assistant in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering
effective September 24, 2001. Jenna comes to us from the Department
of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences where she has been
working for the past year as an Administrative Assistant in the
Headquarters Office. Previously, she worked as an Administrative
Assistant in the School of Science Dean's Office.
