September 2003
Around DMSE
After a summer of extraordinary effort on the part of
department faculty and staff, MIT Facilities personnel, and
many contractors, the new DMSE Undergraduate Teaching Lab
was opened on September 2. Many faculty and
friends gathered
in the
NanoLab
where
they
were addressed by Professor Subra Suresh, President Charles
M. Vest, Provost Robert Brown, and Dean of Engineering Thomas
Magnanti. Prof. Suresh reviewed some of the history of the
department and of the field of materials science and engineering.
Nearly 100 Course 3 students and staff and other friends
were able to watch the proceedings on MIT Cable from 6-120
(the ceremony was broadcast over MIT Cable over the next
48 hours).
Teaching labs have been a part of the undergraduate curriculum
since the department's founding but the original materials
studied were metals, then ceramics and polymers were added,
and now the field also encompasses biomaterials, nanomaterials,
and computational materials science.
Prof. Suresh recognized the hard work of all the faculty,
students, and staff who have worked on constructing the new
lab and the new curriculum. He also thanked the Lord Corporation
of Massachusetts and the Institute for financial support.
President Vest, Provost Brown, and Dean Magnanti all praised
DMSE's commitment to their educational mission.
Following
the remarks, Prof. Suresh and President Vest officially opened
the lab by cutting a ribbon in front of the doors and unveiling
the plaque that thanks the donors.
The guests toured the lab space, met David Bono who will
be the lab manager, and shared some refreshments at a reception
in Lobby 6.
